5 Ways to Introduce Colour into your Home with Polished Plaster

5 Ways to Introduce Colour into your Home with Polished Plaster

As we move into spring, there’s a natural shift towards lighter, brighter interiors. Colour begins to re-enter our spaces, replacing the darker tones and heavy textures of winter. But for many, the idea of introducing colour can feel daunting, especially when aiming to maintain a refined, timeless look.

Polished plaster offers the perfect solution. With its soft movement, depth, and versatility, it allows you to incorporate colour in a way that feels subtle, sophisticated, and effortlessly modern.

Here are five ways to introduce colour using polished plaster, without overwhelming your space.

  1. Start with a Statement Wall

If you’re hesitant about committing to colour, a single feature wall is the perfect place to begin.

A polished plaster statement wall adds depth and texture, allowing colour to feel layered rather than flat. Opt for soft, nature-inspired tones like sage green or muted blush to bring a sense of calm while still making an impact.

This approach works beautifully in:

  • Living rooms
  • Bedrooms
  • Reception areas

It creates a focal point without dominating the entire space.

  1. Embrace Soft, Tonal Palettes

Colour doesn’t have to mean bold or bright. One of the most effective ways to introduce it subtly is through tonal variation.

Polished plaster naturally lends itself to this, with finishes that shift slightly in tone depending on the light. Think:

  • Warm neutrals with a hint of peach
  • Off-whites with creamy undertones
  • Greys softened with beige or taupe

These understated hues add warmth and interest while maintaining a minimalist aesthetic.

  1. Use Colour to Highlight Architectural Features

Rather than applying colour across large surfaces, use it to draw attention to key design elements.

Polished plaster can be used to enhance:

  • Fireplace walls
  • Feature ceilings
  • Staircases

By applying colour in a more contained way, you create visual interest and contrast without overwhelming the room. It’s a refined approach that feels intentional and design-led.

  1. Let Texture Do the Talking

One of the biggest advantages of polished plaster is that it doesn’t rely on bold colour to stand out, its texture does much of the work.

A subtle Surfaceform Polished Plaster colour combined with a textured finish can:

  • Reflect light beautifully
  • Add movement to walls
  • Create a sense of depth

This means you can keep your colour palette soft while still achieving a high-impact finish. It’s ideal for those who prefer a more neutral interior but want to elevate it beyond standard paint.

  1. Balance Colour with Natural Materials

To keep coloured finishes feeling grounded, pair Surfaceform Polished Plaster with natural materials.

Consider combining it with:

  • Wood
  • Stone
  • Linen
  • Brass or aged metals

These elements help to soften the overall look and create a cohesive, balanced space. The result is an interior that feels fresh for spring, yet timeless enough to last year-round.

Introducing colour into your interiors doesn’t have to mean making bold or risky choices. With polished plaster, it’s about layering tone, texture, and light to create a finish that feels both elevated and effortless. Whether you opt for a soft statement wall or subtle tonal variation throughout a space, the key is balance, allowing colour to enhance your interior, not overpower it.

At Surfaceform, we work closely with clients, designers, and architects to create bespoke finishes that bring spaces to life in a considered and timeless way. If you’ve got a project with Surfaceform in mind, reach out to us today. We’d love to hear from you.

Surfaceform at Surface Design Show London – A Standout Showcase of Craft, Texture and Innovation

Surfaceform was delighted to attend this year’s Surface Design Show in London, one of the leading events in the UK calendar for architects, designers and specification professionals. The show once again proved why it remains such an important meeting point for the surface and materials industry, bringing together creativity, craftsmanship and innovation under one roof.

Surface Design Show continues to be a valuable platform for discovering emerging trends, new materials, and evolving design approaches across the built environment. With thousands of visitors and exhibitors in attendance, the event provided an excellent opportunity to connect with industry peers, suppliers, collaborators and new contacts.

For the Surfaceform team, it was an energising few days of conversations and insights, from textured finishes and sustainable materials to the growing demand for bespoke, hand-applied surfaces that bring character and depth to modern spaces.

Throughout the show, it was clear that designers and specifiers are increasingly seeking specialist finishes that deliver both performance and visual impact. There is a continued shift toward tactile, crafted surfaces that add individuality and authenticity to projects, something that sits at the heart of Surfaceform’s work.

Discussions around polished plaster, textured wall finishes and decorative surface solutions highlighted how important expert application and material knowledge are in achieving standout results.

Events like Surface Design Show are about more than products, they’re about people and ideas. The team had the opportunity to connect and reconnect with industry partners, meet new design professionals, and discuss upcoming projects across hospitality, commercial and high-end residential sectors.

The level of creativity on display across the exhibition floor was hugely inspiring and reinforces the direction the industry is moving, toward higher quality finishes, sustainable approaches, and detail-driven design.

Alongside attending the show, Surfaceform has recently launched its new brochure, designed to give architects, designers and clients a comprehensive look at our finishes, capabilities and recent project work.

The brochure showcases the full Surfaceform finishes collection, highlighting material options, surface applications and sector experience, alongside project case studies and detailed insight into our technical expertise and specification support.

We look forward to continuing the conversations started there and collaborating with designers and specifiers on projects that push creative boundaries through surface finishes.

Clay Lime Plaster Surfaceform

An Introduction to Surfaceform Clay Lime Plaster

An Introduction to Surfaceform Clay Lime Plaster

At Surfaceform, we believe the materials you choose should do more than look beautiful; they should help create spaces that feel better too. Our Clay Lime plaster embodies that philosophy, combining natural elegance with sustainable performance.

Clay Lime plaster is a unique, natural material that brings together the best qualities of both clay and lime. This fusion results in a breathable, non-toxic finish that contributes to healthier interiors.

Crafted from mineral-based components, Clay Lime is free from synthetic additives, making it an ideal choice for eco-friendly construction, renovation, and restoration projects.

Beyond its visual appeal, Clay Lime plaster offers a range of functional benefits that enhance indoor comfort and wellbeing:

  • Regulates humidity: Its breathable composition helps balance moisture levels, creating a comfortable, stable environment.
  • Prevents mould: The natural alkalinity of lime inhibits mould and bacteria growth, ensuring cleaner air quality.
  • Maintains temperature: Clay Lime helps regulate indoor temperature, promoting energy efficiency and natural climate control.

These qualities make it particularly well-suited for sustainable homes, restorations, and design-led commercial spaces seeking to align beauty with performance.

Its soft, organic appearance and subtle colour variations bring warmth and depth to interiors, creating a timeless, tactile finish that feels as natural as it looks.

Available in Polished, Semi-Polished, and Stone finishes, our Clay Lime offers a versatile palette for architects and designers looking to introduce texture, tone, and authenticity to their projects.

We recently had the pleasure of collaborating with KB Architects to bring an elegant and organic touch to the reception area of Vere Dental in London. Surfaceform supplied and installed Clay Lime Semi-Polished Beige plaster panels across the reception walls, introducing a sense of calm and subtle sophistication.

The semi-polished beige tones brought depth and warmth to the space, complementing the smooth architectural lines of the design. Paired with a striking bronze reception desk, the contrast of textures enhances the serene, natural quality of the plaster finish.

Clay Lime plaster reflects Surfaceform’s commitment to sustainable innovation. Whether applied to residential interiors, hospitality spaces, or feature walls, it delivers a finish that’s both functional and visually captivating.

Transforming Homes with Texture – Residential Projects Featuring Surfaceform

When it comes to creating a space that feels elevated, tactile, and timeless, texture is everything. At Surfaceform, we believe that beautifully crafted wall finishes can completely transform the mood and character of a home. Our bespoke polished plaster finishes are more than just decorative; they are a design statement rooted in craftsmanship.

From serene bathrooms to dramatic stairwells and sophisticated kitchens, here’s how Surfaceform finishes have helped redefine residential interiors.

A Sculptural Stairwell at the Beach House, Carlingford Lough

Finish: Bronze Polished Plaster

Working alongside the talented team at Atelier Belfast, we crafted a sweeping bronze polished plaster finish for the staircase at The Beach House. The soft, reflective texture creates a sculptural focal point, catching natural light throughout the day and adding depth and elegance to the entrance space. This finish was chosen not just for its beauty, but for its durability, a perfect combination for high-traffic areas like stairwells.

Skylit Sophistication in Elm Tree Road, London

Finish: Impasto Polished Plaster

In this striking residential project, Surfaceform’s Impasto Polished Plaster was applied around the skylight in the kitchen, drawing the eye upward and turning a simple architectural feature into a standout design element. The impasto finish plays beautifully with natural light, adding a bold yet organic texture that complements the interiors.

This project demonstrates how even subtle details like ceiling finishes can dramatically shape the feel of a space.

Immersive Tranquillity in the Kestral Project

Finishes: Fluted Relief Plaster & Classic Polished Plaster

At Surfaceform, we take pride in collaborating with visionary designers to create extraordinary spaces, and the Kestral project, led by the talented Sinead Kelly Herbett is a perfect example. This innovative residential transformation features a truly unique basement design.

A key architectural feature is a window offering a direct view into the adjacent pool, allowing light and reflections to interact with the interiors. To enhance this space, we applied our Fluted Relief Plaster, designed to capture the fluidity and motion of the water.

To complement the walls, we introduced a Classic Polished Plaster ceiling, enhancing the sense of openness and maximising natural light, a feature rarely expected in a basement setting.

In the pool area itself, our smooth and refined Classic Polished Plaster finish helps set a tranquil and luxurious tone, ensuring every surface contributes to a restful and relaxing experience.

Each of these homes tells a story, not just through layout or furnishings, but through the surfaces that frame and define every space. At Surfaceform, we believe in the power of our finishes to transform and elevate every space.

We’re passionate about transforming spaces with our Polished Plaster, one project at a time. Visit us in our Cookstown showroom for a free consultation or reach out for sample packs and finish recommendations from our expert team, here at Surfaceform.

Sustainable Polished Plaster

Sustainable Polished Plaster – Surfaceform

What Makes Polished Plaster Sustainable?

When we think about sustainable design, our minds often go to recycled materials, energy-efficient systems, or low-emission transport. But sustainability isn’t just about the big moves, it’s also found in the subtle choices, like the finishes we apply to the walls that surround us.

At Surfaceform, we believe that beauty and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand. Here’s how our polished plaster finishes and the ethos behind them, are helping shape a more sustainable future in interior design.

Natural Materials at the Core

Polished plaster is inherently sustainable thanks to its composition. Many of our finishes, such as Marmorino and Tadelakt, are lime-based. Lime is a natural, abundant material with a significantly lower embodied carbon footprint than cement-based alternatives.

Our other finishes, including Clay Lime Plaster and Hydro cement, are made from mineral-rich blends that are non-toxic, breathable, and free from harmful VOCs (volatile organic compounds), creating healthier indoor environments.

Longevity = Less Waste

Durability is key to sustainability. Surfaceform finishes are handcrafted for lasting performance, meaning fewer replacements and repairs over time. Many of our plasters age well, developing even more character with time, unlike synthetic alternatives that wear quickly or date.

By specifying long-lasting materials, architects and designers reduce environmental impact across the life of a project.

Minimal Waste, Maximum Precision

Every Surfaceform finish is made to order. This not only allows for complete design customisation but also ensures minimal material waste. Whether it’s a bespoke colour blend or a specific texture finish, we only mix what’s needed and use it with care.

Supporting the SME Climate Hub

Surfaceform is proud to be a part of the SME Climate Hub, a global initiative that empowers small and medium-sized enterprises to take meaningful climate action. By joining, we’ve committed to halving our emissions by 2030, achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 and publicly reporting our progress every year.

This pledge guides everything from how we source materials to how we operate our workshop and support our clients.

Sustainable Design, Without Compromise

Whether we’re working on a luxury retail fit-out, a wellness space, or a private home, we believe sustainable choices should never come at the expense of quality or aesthetic integrity. Our mission is to offer finishes that are as kind to the planet as they are beautiful to look at, without compromise.

If you’re an architect, designer, or homeowner looking to integrate sustainable materials into your next project, we’d love to help.

Polished Plaster Question's

Your Polished Plaster Questions Answered Everything you need to know about Surfaceform Polished Plaster

Your Polished Plaster Questions – Answered

Everything you need to know about Surfaceform Polished Plaster

At Surfaceform, we get a lot of questions about polished plaster, and for good reason. It’s one of the most versatile, luxurious, and timeless finishes available for both commercial and residential spaces. Whether you’re an architect/designer specifying for a project or a homeowner looking to elevate your interiors, we have the answers you need to some of the most commonly asked questions.

  1. What is Polished Plaster?

Polished plaster is a decorative wall finish made using natural materials such as lime, marble dust, and pigments. Skilled applicators hand-layer it in thin coats  to create a smooth, matt or textured surface with natural movement and depth. This artisanal finish brings texture, tone, and craftsmanship into every space.

  1. Is it the same as Venetian Plaster?

Venetian plaster is a type of polished plaster – known for its high-gloss, marble-like appearance. Our Surfaceform Classic is venetian plaster.

However, “polished plaster” is a broader category that includes a variety of finishes, from highly reflective glossy to matte, textured to smooth, each offering a different look and feel.

  1. Where can Polished Plaster be used?

Polished plaster is incredibly versatile suitable on a wide range of surfaces. It’s ideal for:

  • Commercial lobbies/Offices
  • Retail Environments
  • Feature walls
  • Residential interiors
  • Stairways
  • Swimming Pool and Spa Areas
  • Ceilings and curved surfaces
  • Bathrooms (with appropriate sealing)

  1. Is Polished Plaster waterproof?

By itself polished plaster is breathable and moisture resistant, but it is not fully waterproof.  To protect it in high-moisture areas, we apply a specialist waterproof sealer.

For high-moisture areas such as wet rooms or shower enclosures, we recommend more robust specialist finishes like Tadelakt, Hydrocement, or Microcement which  can be sealed for  full water protection.

  1. What colours and textures are available?

Almost endless.  We offer a wide range of colours, tones, and textures, and we can create bespoke finishes to suit your project. Whether you’re after a warm, earthy tone or a cooler, contemporary look, we will guide you through samples options during a free consultation at our Cookstown showroom.

  1. How do you maintain Polished Plaster?

Polished plaster is low maintenance. Simply dust with a soft cloth and clean with a damp, non-abrasive sponge when needed. For high-traffic or moisture-prone areas, we can recommend protective sealers to enhance durability.

  1. Is it environmentally friendly?

Yes, especially lime-based polished plaster. It’s a natural, non-toxic material with low VOCs. Lime also has carbon-absorbing properties during curing, making it a more sustainable choice for interiors.

  1. Can it be repaired if damaged?

Yes, polished plaster can often be repaired or retouched by a skilled applicator.
