What Makes Polished Plaster Sustainable?

When we think about sustainable design, our minds often go to recycled materials, energy-efficient systems, or low-emission transport. But sustainability isn’t just about the big moves, it’s also found in the subtle choices, like the finishes we apply to the walls that surround us.

At Surfaceform, we believe that beauty and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand. Here’s how our polished plaster finishes and the ethos behind them, are helping shape a more sustainable future in interior design.

Natural Materials at the Core

Polished plaster is inherently sustainable thanks to its composition. Many of our finishes, such as Marmorino and Tadelakt, are lime-based. Lime is a natural, abundant material with a significantly lower embodied carbon footprint than cement-based alternatives.

Our other finishes, including Clay Lime Plaster and Hydro cement, are made from mineral-rich blends that are non-toxic, breathable, and free from harmful VOCs (volatile organic compounds), creating healthier indoor environments.

Longevity = Less Waste

Durability is key to sustainability. Surfaceform finishes are handcrafted for lasting performance, meaning fewer replacements and repairs over time. Many of our plasters age well, developing even more character with time, unlike synthetic alternatives that wear quickly or date.
