Your Polished Plaster Questions – Answered

Everything you need to know about Surfaceform Polished Plaster

At Surfaceform, we get a lot of questions about polished plaster, and for good reason. It’s one of the most versatile, luxurious, and timeless finishes available for both commercial and residential spaces. Whether you’re an architect/designer specifying for a project or a homeowner looking to elevate your interiors, we have the answers you need to some of the most commonly asked questions.

  1. What is Polished Plaster?

Polished plaster is a decorative wall finish made using natural materials such as lime, marble dust, and pigments. Skilled applicators hand-layer it in thin coats  to create a smooth, matt or textured surface with natural movement and depth. This artisanal finish brings texture, tone, and craftsmanship into every space.

  1. Is it the same as Venetian Plaster?

Venetian plaster is a type of polished plaster – known for its high-gloss, marble-like appearance. Our Surfaceform Classic is venetian plaster.

However, “polished plaster” is a broader category that includes a variety of finishes, from highly reflective glossy to matte, textured to smooth, each offering a different look and feel.

  1. Where can Polished Plaster be used?

Polished plaster is incredibly versatile suitable on a wide range of surfaces. It’s ideal for:

  • Commercial lobbies/Offices
  • Retail Environments
  • Feature walls
  • Residential interiors
  • Stairways
  • Swimming Pool and Spa Areas
  • Ceilings and curved surfaces
  • Bathrooms (with appropriate sealing)

  1. Is Polished Plaster waterproof?

By itself polished plaster is breathable and moisture resistant, but it is not fully waterproof.  To protect it in high-moisture areas, we apply a specialist waterproof sealer.

For high-moisture areas such as wet rooms or shower enclosures, we recommend more robust specialist finishes like Tadelakt, Hydrocement, or Microcement which  can be sealed for  full water protection.

  1. What colours and textures are available?

Almost endless.  We offer a wide range of colours, tones, and textures, and we can create bespoke finishes to suit your project. Whether you’re after a warm, earthy tone or a cooler, contemporary look, we will guide you through samples options during a free consultation at our Cookstown showroom.

  1. How do you maintain Polished Plaster?

Polished plaster is low maintenance. Simply dust with a soft cloth and clean with a damp, non-abrasive sponge when needed. For high-traffic or moisture-prone areas, we can recommend protective sealers to enhance durability.

  1. Is it environmentally friendly?

Yes, especially lime-based polished plaster. It’s a natural, non-toxic material with low VOCs. Lime also has carbon-absorbing properties during curing, making it a more sustainable choice for interiors.

  1. Can it be repaired if damaged?

Yes, polished plaster can often be repaired or retouched by a skilled applicator.
